DENTAL BRIDGES

Dental Bridges and Dental Care

Dental bridges are comprised of a few crowns that are fused together to help replace one or more missing teeth. They are usually made of a porcelain infused metal, making them tooth colored.

All About Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are a special type of dental restoration prosthesis. They are most commonly used to fill in the gaps of missing teeth by fitting artificial teeth into thos gaps and securing them to the adjacent teeth or dental implants. Varying types of dental bridges have become very numerous over the years. Their types depend on the materials they are made from, how they are made, and how they are secured in the mouth. They can be used for a number of dental issues.

Dental bridges are intended to fill the space left by one or more teeth, placing the artificial teeth in the space between the surrounding teeth, and anchoring to them, so that the bridge spans the gap. Dental Bridges and Dental Care

There is a multi-step process for placing dental bridges. If you are considering getting a dental bridge placed, you should become familiar with the following procedure:

Step 1 – Preparation of the Teeth: The prosthetic is anchored to existing teeth so there is prep work to be done in order to make sure the teeth can receive the crowns and support the bridge. In order to make sure there is room for the crown sittings and to ensure they can hold the bridgework securely in place the teeth on either side of the gap must be resized. This step is permanent and you will need to have crowns on the teeth, even if you do not get the bridge installed because you are filing down the outer surface of the teeth and exposing the inner parts of the teeth.

Step 2 –Impression of the Teeth: Once the teeth are prepared and have been correctly modified for fitting of the crowns, an impression of the teeth will be made by the dentist. The impression may be taken by means of a digital scan of the teeth or it can be done the more traditional way with a plaster mold resin. Regardless of how the impression is made, it will be used to design the bridge so it fits into your mouth. Each mouth is different so this step is absolutely critical in order to get a good fitting and functioning dental bridge that can do the job. Without it, you will have a bridge that is either too big or too small or that does not fit right and can cause further damage to your teeth and gums.

Step 3 – Placing a Temporary Bridge: During the waiting period while the bridge is being made, a temporary bridge will be used to hold its place and keep the teeth protected and in place until the permanent prosthetic has been finished. This temporary bridge offers functionality and it will also help safeguard your teeth during the waiting period. Depending on several factors you may need the temporary bridge for a few weeks to a month and then it will be switched out for the permanent bridge work.

Step 4 – Getting the Permanent Dental Bridge: Once the final dental bridge is ready to go, you will have to go back to your dentist so that they can remove the temporary prosthetic and put in the permanent bridge. The crowns will attach to the neighboring teeth and the bridge will fill in the gaps between the teeth. Everything will be sealed to lock plaque and bacteria and the bridge work will be attached and secured into place- and unless severe damage happens at some point down the line, the bridge can remain in place permanently.
