Baby

Even before the first tooth starts to peek through you need to take care of your baby’s mouth by cleaning the gums with a soft washcloth and baby toothpaste every day. The gums are the foundation of the teeth so they must be taken care of! As soon as teeth appear, decay can occur. Tooth nubs can be cleaned with a washcloth and toothpaste like you did with the gums and this should be done several times a day to keep the baby teeth healthy and strong.

Up to Three

Children under 3 years of age need to start brushing their teeth, and by the time they reach the age of three you can begin to use fluoride toothpaste. A small dab no bigger than a pea is needed. Brushing needs to be done at least twice daily- in the morning and evening- and should always be supervised or done by an adult to ensure safety and proper brushing. This is a good time to model good brushing habits and brush your teeth with your child. This is one of the important dental habits for kids all parents need to be doing so they can be teaching kids to take care of their teeth!

Three to Six

For children 3 to 6 years of age, the use of fluoride toothpaste is important to protect their new adult teeth that begin coming in at around this age. Two to three brushings each day is best and parents need to supervise children’s brushing and encourage good brushing and dental care habits each and every day. When your child has two teeth that touch, it is time to start teaching them about flossing.
